Step through our doors and embark on a journey through 3 billion years of history—connecting you with the people, cultures, and science behind the ancient Black Hills and prairies of Western South Dakota. It’s a journey rich with stories and traditions—from prehistoric encounters and Native American heritage to pioneer tales and spaceflight.

Each member of the family will delight in discovering a vast array of cultural artifacts and interactive experiences and leave with a connection to this unique and diverse place Lakotas fittingly called the “Island in the Plains.”

  • Forces of Flight Program

    --Youth Program--

    Forces of Flight is a NEW program designed to introduce youth to the world of aviation. Learners will be exposed to several activities that will help them understand the four forces of flight (lift, weight, thrust and drag).

    Forces of Flight takes place on Rapid City Area School District early release Friday afternoons.

    Cynthia Thomas of Purple Pottery Productions is an enrolled member of the Oneida Nation.  She holds a a B.A. in Art from University of Wisconsin, Green Bay, and a Master of Arts degree in Secondary Education at Cameron University.

    Cynthia pulls inspiration from Oneida culture and ceremony as well as her family and community. She has won multiple awards for her work.

    Show opens in the Sioux Indian Museum Gallery on September 15th, 2024 and runs through December 15th, 2024.

    Join us for the new season of STEAM Saturdays for youth ages 6 - 13 on Saturdays starting this fall. Students will learn exciting topics pertaining to Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math with hands on activities.

    Programs are FREE to museum members and included with admission for non-members.

    The Story of Billy Mills Told Through the Artwork of SD Nelson

    October 11th, 2024 - May 18th, 2025

    Come see the legendary story of Billy Mills, Lakota Olympic Gold Medalist, with featured illustrations from his new book, Wings of an Eagle. Artwork created by SD Nelson and on display in the Adelstein Gallery.
