Minerals of the Black Hills

May 1 - Session 1: **Optional** (Session Located May 1 at 6 PM at The Outdoor Campus - West) Introduction to Rocks & Minerals of the Black Hills. Learn about sedimentary rock formations such as the yellow Pahasapa formations in Spearfish Canyon, the 1.7 billion year old igneous rock of Harney Peak and the gold bearing metamorphic rock of the Homestake mine. The minerals found in all rocks types, sedimentary, metamorphic, and igneous, will be summarized. FREE

May 2 - Session 2: Sedimentary Rocks. This session will include a detailed look at the rocks & minerals found in most of the sedimentary formations of the Black Hills. Hands-on rocks and minerals will be provided. The student will also learn identification techniques.

May 3 - Session 3: Igneous Rocks

May 4 - Session 4: Metamorphic Rocks - also learn about outdoor rock collecting lessons with a briefing of land and law issues.

May 5 - Session 5: Field Trip to a world renowned Black Hills mine. Attendance in Sessions 2-4 is required for participation in the field experience.

The Journey Museum is currently in Summer Hours:

Winter Hours

(October 1st – April 30th)
10 AM – 5 PM Monday through Saturday
1 PM – 5 PM Sundays

Summer Hours

(May 1st – September 30th)
9 AM – 6 PM Monday through Saturday
11 AM – 5 PM Sundays

Admission

All individual admissions are good for two days with receipt.

Museum General Admission:

Adults (ages 18+) $10
Seniors (ages 62+) $8
Students (ages 6 – 17) $7
Children 5 & under FREE with family

Groups (10+ people):

$7 per person

Tour guides available. Please call (605) 394-6923 one week prior to visit to schedule.

Education Groups (12+ students):

$3 per student (all students 18 and under)
$5 College Students

Chaperones are requested. Special pricing will be extended to adult chaperones.
