Summer Series: Nuggets and Neutrinos
August 2, 2019 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Enjoy our Summer Series - presentations on Black Hills figures or events packed with history and fun! Each presentation lasts an hour, including a Q&A.
The Black Hills have an amazing history with gold, and Lead was at the very heart of all the activity. Come hear the amazing story of this small town - from its humble beginnings to its heyday - and how it’s moving forward.
The community of Lead has always been all about the earth, from the establishment of the Homestake Gold Mine and its dramatic history to the cutting edge science 4,850 feet down in the Sanford Underground Research Facility.
Our presenter, Lead Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sierra Ward, is passionate about the history of Lead as well as its future!
She says, “George Hearst could never have imagined how his purchase of the Homestake claim would lead to scientific discoveries that would affect the entire world in the 21st century. Most of what we know here wouldn’t have existed without the discovery of [gold] in the late 1800s.”
Ward traces her Lead heritage back to one of the only continuously mining families throughout Homestake Mining Company’s 126-year history. Someone in her family worked in the mine from start to finish. She and her husband live in Lead after they decided to make the Black Hills their permanent home 7 years ago.
Admission for a Summer Series event is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and half-off for members. Call 394-6923 to reserve seats.
