Black Hills Astronomical Society - Orbit Determination from Astrophotography
April 15, 2019 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
In the summer of 2018, Black Hills Astronomical Society member Rod Michael took a series of astrophotographs of the asteroid Vesta over a period of roughly three weeks. By measuring the distance in the photographs from Vesta to nearby stars whose locations are known, the position of Vesta can be calculated with surprising accuracy. Using 20 positions obtained in this way, the orbit of the giant asteroid Vesta is computed.
