Take a peek into a world of wonder in a Discovery Expedition class. Our Journey educators create wonderfully playful and interactive learning experiences for people of all ages to enjoy. OTHER EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

DISCOVERY EXPEDITION SCHEDULE
May 18-24: Gold Panning
In conjunction with our newest exhibit, "Gold!" come learn how to pan for real gold. Would you have what it takes to strike it rich as a gold miner in the 1870s? Appropriate for all ages.
May 25-31: Learn To Use A Compass
In conjunction with our newest exhibit, "Gold!" kids can learn how to use a compass and "find" their way around the museum.
June 1-7: Story Of An Arrowhead
Have you ever found an arrowhead and wanted to know about its history? Learn how archaeologists figure out the stories of arrowheads and see what you can do to help preserve these precious stories.
June 8-14: Rapid City Flood Walk
Self-guided walk along Rapid Creek to learn about the 1972 Flood. Start at The Journey Museum and Learning Center to receive your map and information.
June 15-21: Telegraph
Come see an old telegraph machine up close and learn about Morse code. You can even try your hand at writing a telegram!
June 22-28: Dino Doomsday
Act as a detective and piece together evidence to find out what caused the mass extinction of the dinosaurs.
June 29 - July 5: Old West Cooking
Choose which foods to pack or leave behind if you were a cook on a chuckwagon.
July 6-12: Dating A Fossil
How do paleontologists know how old a fossil is? Come find out!
July 13-19: Survival On An Unknown Planet
Make decisions about what items astronauts would rank as the most important if they were trapped on an unknown planet.
July 20-26: Egg Tempera Paint
During the Renaissance, artists used eggs to make paint. Kids can try their hand at painting with eggs and…Jell-O! There’s nothing quite like it.
July 27 - Aug. 2: Fossil Find
Did you know that Rapid City was once covered in water? Come learn about some of the small fossils from the Western Interior Seaway.
Aug. 3-9: Galaxy In A Bottle
This craft is out of this world! Create your own personal galaxy in a bottle by using your scientific mind to combine materials.
Aug. 10-16: Eagles and Ferrets
Learn about endangered animals in the Black Hills, like the bald eagle and the black-footed ferret. We'll make a food web to understand how easily animals are affected by the world.
Aug. 17-23: Bison Box
The Lakotas didn't waste a single bit of the bison. Get a close-up look at how each part of the animal was used. This is in conjunction with our latest exhibit on bison, which opens Aug. 16.
Aug. 24-30: Furry Match
Kids can touch animal furs and guess which animal it came from! They'll learn about fur trading while they’re at it.
Aug. 31 - Sept. 2: Wacky Watercolors
Learn about Grace French and make your own simple watercolor painting.
Sept. 7-8: Chuckwagon Packin'
Can you survive on the trail out west? Choose which foods to pack for your chuckwagon and learn about the open range!
Sept. 14-15: Aqua Scientist
Learn about water pollution and conduct an experiment to see what filters our dirty water best.
Sept. 21-22: Survive the Oregon Trail
Feeling nostalgic for the computer game from your youth? Come play the handheld version that's nearly identical to the classic. Look out for dysentery!
Sept. 28-29: Home Tweet Home
Save the birds by making a bird feeder to take home!
Oct. 5-6: The Making of a Tipi
Join us in a real tipi to learn how it was made!
Oct. 12-15: Native American Day Celebration
You'll have a great time playing Lakota games and experiencing Native American traditions. Stop by to learn about the majestic bison and other important cultural aspects! Click here for details.
Oct. 19-20: Who Pooped in the Museum?
Get ready for some gross-out science! Match fake scat to animals in our natural history exhibit.
Oct. 26-27: Scat Detective
More gross-out science as we dissect fake scat to find out what goodies the animals had to eat!
Nov. 2-3: An Arrow's Journey
