Summer Series: Custer Expedition
July 19, 2019 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Enjoy our Summer Series - presentations on Black Hills figures or events packed with history and fun! Each presentation lasts an hour, including a Q&A.
Historian and Photographer Paul Horsted will take you on the trail traveled by Gen. George Armstrong Custer in the summer of 1874.
With his co-authors Ernie Grafe and Jon Nelson, he used original maps, diaries, and other first-hand accounts to trace the route through the Black Hills, publishing the results in the books “Exploring with Custer” and “Crossing the Plains with Custer.”
Using the first photographs ever taken in the Black Hills during this expedition, Paul “re-photographed” each site to reveal amazing changes and surprising similarities between past and present.
“Even after 20 years of research, we’re finding that the Custer Expedition photographs have secrets yet to be revealed,” Horsted says.
Horsted plans to visit all 50 of the Black Hills/Custer Expedition photo sites again soon and will discuss ongoing research during his program.
Horsted has been photographing South Dakota’s people, places and history for nearly 40 years. His work has appeared in publications such as “LIFE” magazine, “Reader’s Digest,” “USA Today,” “Smithsonian,” and “South Dakota Magazine.”
We mark the Custer Expedition and the discovery of gold in the Black Hills with our exhibit “Gold!”
