Turtle Soup - "Fassbender Photographic Collection"

February 15, 2019  12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Feed your mind and your belly with Turtle Soup, featuring a presentation on historic Black Hills figures or events and a bowl of soup provided by Angel’s Catering.

This week, Richard Carlson presents, "Fassbender Photographic Collection: Stories of Yesteryear."

Carlson will give a brief overview of the Fassbender Collection, followed by a close look at prominent stories from the '30s and '40s - stories like that of George Sitts, who was convicted of murdering two law enforcement officers and was the only person to be executed by electric chair in South Dakota.

You'll also hear about George Hopkins, a parachutist hoping to promote his attempt at doing the most skydives in one day. The promotional stunt was to land on Devil’s Tower, where he ended up stranded for six days.

Richard Carlson is the digital archivist for the Fassbender Photographic Collection. He spent 20 years as a full-time photojournalist before moving to the Black Hills. He's also a photography educator, having spent four semesters as an adjunct professor at two universities in addition to many independent workshops and classes.

Admission for
Turtle Soup is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and half-off for members. Call 394-6923 to reserve seats.
