Turtle Soup - "Obsession with the Wild West"

April 5, 2019  12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Feed your mind and your belly with Turtle Soup, featuring a presentation on historic Black Hills figures or events and a bowl of soup provided by Angel’s Catering.

This week, Tom Griffith presents, "Obsession with the Wild West."

From the gold rush to gunslingers and untimely death, Wild West tales are larger than life. Pioneers braved unforgiving natural surroundings and risked life and limb in their pursuit of a personal El Dorado. But how does the lore hold up to reality?

Griffith says the legends of the Western frontier parallel modern-day efforts of fame and fortune seekers and that our hunger for “heroes, heroines and villains will be satiated right up to the time we take that long, dirt nap.”

Serving as the first employee of the Mount Rushmore Society, Griffith helped raise $25 million and staged the formal dedication of the memorial with President George H.W. Bush.

Griffith has been an award-winning reporter, photographer and managing editor in Arizona, Montana and South Dakota. His travel writing and photography have taken him to 80 countries, and he is currently working on his 80th book – “Myths & Legends of the Black Hills.”

He and his wife Nyla live and write in the highest reaches of South Dakota’s fabled Black Hills.

Admission for Turtle Soup is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and half-off for members. Call 394-6923 to reserve seats.
