Education and Programs Director

Position Summary:

The Journey Museum seeks a passionate and inquisitive Curatorial Assistant to support exhibitions, collections, and programming at one of the region’s leading cultural institutions. This museum brings together the unique geology of the Black Hills, the rich heritage of Native American cultures, and the pioneering spirit of early settlers—all in one engaging space. The Curatorial Assistant will work closely with the Director of Collections and museum staff to preserve, interpret, and present stories that shape our shared history. Our ideal candidate has a deep appreciation for and knowledge of both history and the sciences.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assists the Director of Collections in the research, planning, and installation of exhibitions focused on Black Hills history, science, and cultures.

  • Manages and catalog objects in the museum’s collection using best practices in collections care and database management.

  • Maintains the museum’s exhibits and archives, including proper storage and environmental conditions for artifacts and archives, cleaning of museum exhibits, and museum lighting maintenance

  • Contributes to interpretive content for exhibits, labels, and publications.

  • Assist in developing educational programs and public events that connect audiences of all ages to museum content.

  • Help supervise interns and volunteers engaged in curatorial and exhibit projects.

  • Support community collaboration and relationship-building

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in history, anthropology, museum studies, or a related field

  • A knowledge and appreciation of South Dakota History and Lakota culture.

  • Prior museum or curatorial experience, including experience handling artifacts, maintaining exhibits, and exhibition development.

  • Familiarity with collections databases (e.g., PastPerfect, Re:discovery).

  • Strong research, writing, and communication skills.

  • Cultural sensitivity, a collaborative spirit, and a genuine respect for diverse perspectives and lived experiences.
