Director of Education & Programs

Location: Rapid City, SD

Salary: $45,000–$50,000 annually (commensurate with experience)

Status: Full-time (some evenings and weekends required)

Position Summary

The Director of Education & Programs leads the development and delivery of engaging educational and public programs for audiences ranging from toddlers to older adults. This position supervises education staff and volunteers, collaborates with community partners, and helps grow the museum’s educational impact.

Key Responsibilities

The ideal candidate for this role should be comfortable designing and overseeing educational programs, including but not limited to: camps, lectures, and public events. They should be well-versed in hands-on learning and the development of educational materials. Effective collaboration with all museum staff and community partners on exhibit-related programming is a must. Recruitment and training of educational staff and volunteers, responsible budget managing, and grant writing are common responsibilities found within this role.

Qualifications

Qualifications that the ideal candidate for this role would possess include a Bachelor’s degree in Education, Museum Studies, History, Science, or a related field, and 3–5 years of experience in museum education, public history, science communication, or a similar field. Experience in program development, supervision, and grant writing is a plus. The candidate must possess a valid Driver’s License and pass a background check.

Visitor Experience Supervisor

Location: Rapid City, SD

Pay: $18-$22 per hour

Status: Full-time (some evenings and weekends required)

Position Summary

The Visitor Experience Supervisor leads daily front-of-house operations and ensures every guest has a welcoming, seamless, and engaging experience. This role oversees Visitor Services staff, supports programs and events, and helps create an environment where all visitors feel a sense of belonging.

Key Responsibilities

The Visitor Experience Supervisor leads front-of-house operations, including admissions, membership sales, and guest flow, while delivering exceptional customer service and resolving guest concerns. They train and support Visitor Services staff and help maintain a clean, organized, and welcoming environment.

This role also oversees gift shop operations, supports group visits and daily programming logistics, and assists with public programs, events, and facility rentals to ensure a smooth and positive visitor experience.

Qualifications

Qualified candidates will have experience in customer service, hospitality, retail, or visitor services, with prior supervisory or leadership experience preferred. They will demonstrate strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Candidates should also be available to work weekends, evenings, and occasional holidays.

Marketing Coordinator

Location: Rapid City, SD

Pay: $19-$24 per hour

Status: Part-time (Flexible and some hybrid options available)

Position Summary

The Part-Time Marketing Coordinator supports the execution of marketing and communications efforts at The Journey Museum. Working closely with the Director of Operations, this role helps bring programs, exhibitions, and initiatives to life through engaging content, thoughtful design, and coordinated outreach across digital, print, and media channels.

Key Responsibilities

This role includes developing and gathering creative assets such as photography, video, and written content that reflect the museum’s voice and values. The coordinator maintains a content calendar aligned with upcoming programs and strategic priorities, schedules and publishes social media content, and supports email marketing campaigns and newsletters.

The position is responsible for maintaining website updates, ensuring content is accurate and current, and designing graphics and promotional materials including flyers, brochures, and digital assets. The coordinator also supports public relations efforts by assisting with press releases and helping coordinate media outreach, including television, radio, and community broadcast opportunities.

In addition, the role provides general support in executing marketing strategies and campaigns in alignment with the museum’s mission and goals.

Qualifications

Candidates should have experience in marketing, communications, design, or a related field, along with strong writing and communication skills. A creative eye for design and experience with social media platforms and content scheduling tools are important.

Familiarity with graphic design tools such as Canva or Adobe Creative Suite, as well as experience with email marketing platforms and website content management systems, is preferred. The ideal candidate is highly organized, able to manage multiple projects, and comfortable working in a collaborative, mission-driven environment.
