The John Bahcall Colloquium - SURF Speaker Event

  • Journey Museum & Learning Center 222 New York Street Rapid City, SD, 57701 United States (map)

Join us in hosting The Institute for Underground Science at the Sanford Underground Research Facility for this month’s John Bahcall Colloquium, a monthly scientific colloquium in which researchers from across the global scientific community come together.

Presented by SURF, this series features talks spanning underground science, astrophysics, neutrino physics, and related fields, providing a forum for sharing new results, exchanging ideas, and fostering cross-disciplinary collaboration.

This month’s talk launches the newly renamed colloquium—formerly the Deeper Talks series—in honor of John Bahcall, whose scientific vision and mentorship left a lasting impact on neutrino astrophysics and on SURF. Best known for developing the Standard Solar Model and advancing the solar neutrino problem, Dr. John Bahcall also championed curiosity-driven research and the mentoring of young scientists, many of whom are now leaders in the field. Renaming the series reflects The Institute’s commitment to his legacy: advancing fundamental science, supporting the next generation of researchers, and fostering a collaborative scientific community.

Prior to the talk, there is a guided tour of the Journey Museum that begins promptly at 4:00pm. Meet at the Front Desk of The Journey Museum to begin the Tour.

About the speaker, Dr. Neta Bahcall:

Dr. Neta Bahcall, Princeton University astrophysicist and wife of the late John Bahcall, will speak on his extraordinary scientific legacy, alongside highlights of her own pioneering research on dark matter and the large-scale structure of the universe.
