Celebrate the members of The Dream Catchers Artists Guild: Arthur Amiotte, Rechinda Gloria (R.G.) [Cook] Bowker, Roger Broer, Robert Freeman, Donald Montileaux, Robert “Bobby” Penn, Richard Red Owl, Donald Ruleaux & Vic Runnels.
Founded in 1983, the guild held a vision for artist-voiced creative standards within Lakota Arts and the development of professional opportunities for tribal artists of the Northern Plains.
The Dream Catchers Artists Guild organized themselves with sincere intentions “to create and foster a greater understanding and appreciation for the art of Lakota people, not only between Indian and non-Indian people, but to revive the same among the Lakota people” (The Dream Catchers Artists Guild, Ltd., Exhibition Catalog, Sioux Indian Museum and Crafts Center, U.S. Department of Interior, 1987).
About the Speaker
Keith BraveHeart is a visual artist, arts educator, and community organizer. His creative practice includes: painting, independent exhibition curation, documentary film, and community-engaged arts initiatives. He is citizen of the Oglala Sioux Tribe [from the Medicine Root community of the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation], with past services including: Program Manager for the Oglala Lakota Artspace, Associate Professor of Art at Oglala Lakota College, and an inaugural Artist Laureate for the Oglala Sioux Tribe. He received his BFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts (Santa Fe, NM) and MFA from the University of South Dakota (Vermillion, SD). He has mentored youth for over twenty years at the Oscar Howe Summer Art Institute (USD). BraveHeart continues to advocate for the arts in South Dakota, across the Northern Plains region, and within his tribal homelands of the Oglala Lakota.
