Gain a deeper appreciation for the diverse plant communities of the Black Hills and the unique species and habitats that shape this region. Attendees will learn to recognize several widely used plants, understand where they grow, and become familiar with their scientific, common, and Lakota names.
The presentation will also explore ethnobotany and the many ways plants have been used for food and medicine. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how and when plants may be harvested, along with important guidance for doing so safely and respectfully.
About the Presenter
Rylan Sprague is a Tribal member (Mnicoujou Lakota) and Ethnobotanist from the Black Hills. He has nearly 20 years of experience in public land management working for multiple federal agencies - focusing on rare plants, culturally significant plants, archaeology, and history.
Rylan has unique perspectives to share about the land and resources in the Black Hills, derived from the various agency missions, consultations with Tribal Nations, and first-hand experience harvesting foods and medicines in the area. Rylan has emphasized the importance of having Indigenous representation included in public land management decisions across the Black Hills region.
