A Dream Takes Form: Legacies of the Dream Catchers Artists Guild

This fall, The Journey Museum celebrates the artists, vision, and lasting influence of the Dream Catchers Artists Guild.

Founded in 1983 by Oglala Lakota artists Vic Runnels, Donald Ruleaux, and Richard Red Owl, the Dream Catchers brought together an influential group of artists committed to strengthening Lakota art, creating new opportunities for Native artists, and inspiring future generations.

Curated by Keith BraveHeart, A Dream Takes Form traces the artists’ journeys from the 1960s through today, with a special focus on the 1980s, when they came together as a collective and presented their first exhibition at the Sioux Indian Museum in Rapid City.

Featuring artwork from the Sioux Indian Museum Collection and other South Dakota museums, the exhibition explores how Guild members brought Lakota cultural traditions and Modern art concepts together to help shape contemporary Lakota expression.
